We Indians would remember March 10, 2008 as the black day in the history of Indian hockey because Indian hockey team could not qualify for Beijing Olympics for the first time in 80 years of long history of India hockey.

If our cricket team loses a single one-day match, all the news channels start presenting 30-minute special programs and 10-minute slot in every hour news bulletin even for two days explaing who were ’match ka Muzrim’ with self-appointed experts. But No one is there to care Indian hockey, neither Politicians, bureaucrats and retires bureaucrats sitting in hockey federation, nor the media. KPS ’super-ego’ Gill is not whole and sole responsible but we all are equally responsible for the debacle.

and did i hear any protests on the streets for India not Qualifying for the Olympics...oh and the last time Kaif got his windows shattered for Indian team skipped the semis in WC and some similar stories for Dhoni and T-20 champs who were all out for lunch today at the 2nd test with SA.

That is exactly the reason why I strongly feel that the change must come from the players and not only the administration. They need to collectively stand up and make a statement, without forming groups among themselves. As much as everyone is to be blamed, the game at the end of the day is dearest to them and they are the only ones who can make it worth watching again. If this does not happen soon enough, I am afraid Hockey will die very rapidly in India cos no youngster will be willing to take it up. That would be a real sad day, indeed.

It is true that hockey is not getting it’s due share in this cricket crazy nation of ours. But then, any sport gets popular only if the majority of the people like to play it or atleast watch it which is not the case with hockey. So, till it is introduced at a grass roots level from maybe secondary school, and more kids start playing the game, i don’t think hockey will get popular anytime soon.

Jay, what you say is exactly correct. But players and kids at the grass root level will not be encouraged to play or will not take the game up if they even take a glimpse at the present horrific state. When players like Pillay themselves say, ’I will ask my son to never play hockey in his life’, we know it is not good. That is why I say we need a player to inspire others, like Gavaskar was for Sachin’s generation and Sachin was for the next. We can just hope it happens.

K.P.S Gill deserves a flak for (ruling) IHF in the most despotic manner. His decisions has done a great loss to Indian hockey. It doesn’t make any sense that Gill who doesn’t know H of hockey (like me), having the worst charges (attempted rape) against him, is Hockey supremo. What say, attitude?

Well, to say anything but ’You are absolutely right’ would be an understatement Desh. The problem is that we all know he has to go and so do heads of many sports federations in this country, who are all bureaucrats and know nothing about those sports. But they are shameless leeches who suck on the sport endlessly and never go away despite all criticism.

This guy Gill did not resign a few weeks back when we failed to qualify for the Olympics and he says he will ’At Least’ be there till 2010! He is the guy who asked Gavaskar ’What do you know about sports?’, when Sunny asked him to resign. Just imagine :)

it’s really sad that Shahrukh Khan’s hard effort to promote hockey with his movie “Chak De” couldn’t inspire Indian players enough to qualify for the Olympics. and is it true that he’s promoting some of the cricket clubs in India?

Chinky,Chak De was not anything beyond a commercial effort and it is hard for players to perform with inspiration of movies. The problem is that the game has changed and players have not adapted to the faster and longer style. Movies can only do that much. Even the ’Chak De India’ song has now become patent of the cricket team and SRK is the owner of Kolkotta team of IPL. I do not blame SRK on this, he is not there to make a charity and he has not taken up any mantle of uplifting Indian Hockey. He is only making smart business decisions.
